The re-election of former president Ahmed Madobe on November 25, 2024 is currently causing tension in Jubaland, which was when the Federal Government of Somalia first indicated that Madobe’s fourth term constitutionally stood to be less validated after indirect elections were conducted in Kismayo but in this ongoing disagreement Jubaland and Mogadishu have become more antagonistic toward one another in their armed and political field.
The assignment of Turkish-trained troops to Raas-Kambooni-Kmasa(GOR GOR) has accentuated fears of a conflict between the two regions of Somalia. Jubaland sees this as an attack on its autonomy, while Mogadishu views it as a prudent self-defense measure against any possible attack. Concurrently, the regional government disapproves of federal interference, labeling it a move to destabilize.
The latest move has exposed the deeper challenges within the setting of the federal system of Somalia, in which states such as Jubaland invoke their prerogatives in order to fend off any overreaches perceived from Mogadishu.
