The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended the operating license of Super Metro Limited, one of Kenya’s most popular public transport companies. This comes after investigations uncovered multiple violations of transport and safety regulations.
NTSA audit identified a number of non compliances that led to the withdrawal of Super Metro’s services. The key concerns raised include.
1. Non-compliance with Vehicle Requirements
– 15 vehicles had expired inspection certificates among 523 vehicles inspected.
– Eight vehicles lacked valid Road Service Licenses (RSL).
– Most of the vehicles had expired speed limiter licenses and some of them were observed to be driving above the 80 km/h speed limit.
2. Qualification Shortfall.
Super Metro drivers did not possess the proper documentation appended to their license.
On 10th March 2025, a re-exam on the drivers was conducted and 64 failed the exam and their licenses were revoked.
3. Labor Law Violations
– The firm had not provided any employment contracts to the employees.
– Statutory deductions and remittances such as PAYE, NSSF, and NHIF, among others, that are compulsory in labor laws, were absent.
NTSA has given the following directives to Super Metro Limited in order for it to regain compliance and recover its operating license.
– Vehicle Inspection
The firm is to present 294 motor vehicles with issues of non-conformity at the Likoni Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre.
– Driver Retesting
Fifty-two drivers issued with speeding related summons are going to be subjected to re-examination at Likoni Driver Test Centre.
– Employment Compliance
Employment contracts for Super Metro’s all staff and a proof of Statutory deductions and remittances.
– Safety Training
The company is compelled to conduct mandatory road safety sensitization training for its drivers, under the auspices of NTSA officers and provide a comprehensive report of such trainings.
NTSA has, since the suspension, strongly advised members of the public against boarding any Super Metro Limited vehicle. The security agencies have been directed to impound any Super Metro vehicle on the road.
This is in accordance with NTSA’s relentless drive for better road safety and total compliance with transport regulations in Kenya’s public service vehicle (PSV) sector.
Super Metro Limited has not commented officially on the suspension, but it is expected to move towards compliance in order to have its operating license restored.
The suspension of Super Metro Limited serves as a notice to other public transport operators to adhere strictly to NTSA regulations. Safety of the public is the priority, and NTSA will persist with stringent enforcement to ensure that all PSV operators are in full adherence to the necessary legal and safety requirements. Passengers have been urged to use alternative transportation services until such time that Super Metro is in full compliance with its issues.
