Race for AU Commission Chairperson: Key Candidates and Their Vision for Africa

As the African Union (AU) readies itself for its 38th Ordinary Session to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, between February 12 and 16, 2025, the main event is the election of the AU Commission Chairperson. This is a leadership role that is pivotal in steering the continent’s policies and programs

Raila Odinga (Kenya): Former Prime Minister (2008–2013) and AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development (2018–2023). Odinga is endorsed by a number of African leaders, such as those from Uganda, Rwanda, and Ghana.

Mahamoud Ali Youssouf (Djibouti): Foreign Minister of Djibouti since 2005, Youssouf has been a key player in regional diplomacy. His candidacy is supported by the Djiboutian government

Richard Randriamandrato (Madagascar): Madagascar’s ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Randriamandrato has the support of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which is pushing for regional representation

These candidates argued on December 13, 2024, in Addis Ababa on major issues such as regional security, economic integration and African representation on the U.N. Security Council.


The election’s outcome will significantly influence the AU’s direction in addressing challenges like political instability, economic development and regional security. Member states are keenly observing the candidates’ platforms to determine the most suitable leader for the Commission’s next term.
