She Was Just Watching TV”: The Tragic Death of a 12-Year-Old Girl During Saba Saba Protests

On the evening of July 7, 2025, as protest chants echoed through the streets and tear gas filled the air a young girl sat in the comfort of her home in Nairobi’s Kayole estate. She was watching television her schoolbooks neatly stacked on the table beside her. Then, without warning, a stray bullet tore through her living room window, striking her in the chest.
She died before her mother could make it carry her through the front door.

Her name was Ayaan Wanjiru, 12 years old. She played no role in the protests, no politics, no protest sign in her hand only a remote control and cartoons. Her death is being exploited as a poignant symbol of the mounting human toll of state violence in Kenya, as the country grapples with the consequences of another bloody Saba Saba protest.
