On November 8, 2024, there were violent attacks against Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam. This occurred after a UEFA Europa League match between Ajax Amsterdam and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Reportedly, a number of pro-Palestinian youths attacked Israeli supporters in the aftermath of reports that there had been heightened tension before the match, with incidents occurring involving both Israeli and pro-Palestinian supporters.Videos were also produced showing Israeli fans chanting anti-Arab slogans and tearing down Palestinian flags.

Amsterdam Police Chief Peter Holla confirms the circulating footage that the Israelis are the ones who caused the riots by disturbing the locals, disrupting public order. These actions, undoubtedly, detonated a further escalation in violence. The Ajax-Maccabi match ended in a stellar fashion for Ajax, finishing with a rank score of 5-0. The match was dominated, to an extent, by Ajax: their attacking strength and defensive setup were truly resilient.

Both attacks have been categorized as “antisemitic” , with rioters actively targeting Israeli supporters to assault. Five persons were taken to hospital and dozens of suspected attackers have been arrested.Following the violence, the Israeli government sent planes to the Netherlands to evacuate Israeli citizens. Both sides did play a role in stimulating the conflict. This would go on to show just how quickly a situation can escalate and how necessary it is to address the underlying issues if such incidents are to beprevented in the future.

In reaction to the attacks, the mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsema, prohibited demonstrations for three days and gave police emergency powers to stop and search any demonstration. The tension escalates, as the police have now heightened safety checks to avert further violence.
